Retirement activities to enjoy in your leisure time are so numerous I defy anyone to say that they find retirement boring. Retirement is an opportunity to have the time of your life.

You can do more of what you're already doing if you already have hobbies and interests you enjoy, but it's also a time when you can try new and different things. It's a time when you can even be adventurous and daring and do something completely off the wall.

Having a few different retirement activities in your life will help you to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There is much evidence to prove that staying fit and healthy in mind and body will help stave off old age.

After all we baby boomers are the generation that are doing our utmost to defy old age and push the boundaries. Whilst it is inevitable that we will grow old one day I urge you to make the most of your health and fitness levels while you have them.

It's no good when you're in your 60's planning to do the dream holiday next year or the year after that because without getting morbid none of us know what tomorrow will bring. So let's embrace the present and make sure we enjoy life to the full while we can.

There will be plenty of time for the rocking chair on the porch when we're in our dotage. Let's make sure we have a heap of wonderful memories and life experiences to ponder on when we eventually meet old age.

Outdoor Activities

Retirement activities that are popular outdoor pursuits that we can enjoy when the weather allows such as:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Golf
  • Bowls (crown)
  • Sailing
  • Motoring

Outdoor retirement activities are necessary for all of us to help us keep active and healthy. Whatever your level of fitness there is something here for everyone.

Some can be enjoyed alone while others are best played at Clubs and organizations. Joining a club or group is always a better option if possible as it offers wider social activities with the opportunity of meeting new people and opening up other opportunities.

Indoor Activities

Retirement activities that are popular indoor pursuits for when the weather's not so good such as:

  • Dancing
  • Indoor Bowling
  • Swimming
  • Keep Fit Classes
  • Clubs and Organizations
  • Bridge and other Card or Board games.

Living in the U.K. with our unreliable climate it's nice to have the opportunity of doing things indoors when necessary. Particularly during the winter months when outdoor pursuits can be limited.

Don't be afraid to try something new that you've not done before you never know where it will lead. Learning new things is good for keeping the brain active.

Hobbies and Interests

Retirement activities that are classed as hobbies and interests such as:

  • Photography
  • Art & crafts
  • Gardening
  • History
  • Genealogy

Taking up a completely new hobby is always a challenge, but becoming an accomplished photographer is so much easier now with all the new technology of digital cameras and computers.

Tracing your family tree and history is an ever growing popular interest with even celebrities tracing their roots on reality television.

Gardening has always had a good amount of interest and particularly when times are difficult financially more and more people want to grow their own produce and become self-sufficient.

University for Retirees

The University of the Third Age or U3A as its more commonly known is somewhere that encompasses all of the above and much more.

  • It's a place where retirees come together either to share common interests or to learn new ones.
  • A place where retirees can either become learners or teachers. Share your knowledge on a subject dear to your heart with others.
  • A great place to meet new people, create a whole new social life.
  • Somewhere that will give you your purpose back if you're feeling a little lost and wondering what you're going to do in your retirement.

Embark on a journey of discovery with U3A's  which you will find all over the UK and in lots of countries around the world.

Spectator Activities

Then there are many of us who enjoy the sort of  activities that are classed as Spectator Sports and Events

such as:

  • Cricket
  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Tennis
  • Horse Racing
  • Athletics

You know all those tennis or cricket matches you would have loved to gone to but couldn't get the time off work, or perhaps you've always longed to go to Ascot or Henley and never got round to it.

Retirement is the time you can do all of these things and more. Just make sure you get your diary out and book those tickets well in advance rather than leaving them to the last minute and being disappointed.

Out & About

Retirement is the time when we can enjoy being out and about. The type of activities that were restricted before because of lack of time and long working hours such as:

  • Wining and Dining
  • Theatre Trips
  • Museums
  • Art Galleries
  • Antique Fairs
  • Events and Festivals
