Women's State Pension at 60 Entitlement not Benefit

by Christine Williams
(United Kingdom)

There has been a lot of talk by politicians about raising the state pension age for women.

The Coalition Agreement was that the state pension age would not raise for women until 2020 or even 2026, but this has been totally abandoned now.

However, the state pension is not a benefit nor part of the welfare state and therefore has no business being included in Austerity.

The eligibility to the state pension is by number of years of contribution, just like a private or company pension.

Women paid into the state pension with entitlement to payment stated in writing to start at 60.

By not getting the state pension at 60, women are having about £38,000 of payment entitlement permanently taken from them between 60 and 66 that rightfully belongs to them.

Those being told now they will not get their state pension til 67 or even 70, are losing even more of their payment entitlement money forever.

This is our right, our entitlement.

BRING BACK IMMEDIATELY STATE PENSION FOR WOMEN AT 60

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

STATE PENSION A RIGHT NOT A BENEFIT
This e-petition is to give women their state pension to those reaching 60 in 2013, 2014 or 2015, so women lose not one more pound that is rightfully ours by contribution from our working lives over the decades, and by that precedent bring the state pension age of 60 for us all, as many young people now will have contributed over 40 years by the time they get their pension at 60.

UNEMPLOYMENT OF THE OVER 50s

By 2015 over half a million public sector posts will have been lost, and women in their 50s from the lowest grades will be at the greatest risk of redundancy by early retirement, therefore any works pension they gain will be very small indeed, bearing in mind many will have had breaks in service or gone part-time working due to child and elder care commitments.

The unemployment rate of the over 50s has risen fully 50% since the crisis began in 2008, in a society ageist in job recruitment.

WOMEN IN THEIR 50S,
UNEMPLOYMENT AND DISABILITY / LONG TERM ILLNESS

Most of the women in their 50s who are unemployed are also long term sick or disabled.

The benefits for the disabled and long term sick will mostly be lost from
2013 onwards, and other benefits will be difficult to gain by many who are not computer literate, neither own a computer nor have the funds to pay for a broadband subscription, when the Universal Credit can only be claimed online by October 2013.

WHAT THIS PETITION DOES NOT CHANGE

The petition for the immediate return of the state pension at 60 for women, does not request that women have to leave work to gain the state pension or if unemployed not seek a job at any age.

The right to retire at any age remains.

What the petition requests is the entitlement payment from age 60 of the state pension that is our right after 30 years of contribution (at least since 2010, it was 39 years before then and further back in time 44) in our working lives and extension of age related tax allowance to women at 60 and not to tax the state pension at source.
