The Baby Boomer Generation Trial - Guilty as Charged?

Picture the scene - A Baby Boomer Generation Trial.  The Date- 28th February 2014.

The Place The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The Case in question: This post-war generation stands accused of wrecking the world for the generations that follow them.

I've seen many articles written by the younger generation that are quick to blame all the ills of the world on our generation and I have even questioned my peers to see whether they think we are Guilty as charged.

We don't think we are but it does seem to create a division of opinion between the younger generation and us baby boomers.

Although the trial was all done in the name of learning and development by the LSE the evidence for and against was very interesting together with the verdict.

The Prosecution

Who are the Prosecutors?

It is those younger people - the victims of this excess - who were the prosecuting authorities led by a team of lawyers in this unique legal proceedings.

In the Dock!

but plead NOT GUILTY!

The Evidence Against the Baby Boomers!

The baby boomer generation trial charge sheet for the Prosecution was long and damning and stated that the baby boomers may have signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the later international covenants but by their actions they have destroyed or greatly diminished the substance of the rights it contains for Generations X and Y, and all the others still to come.

The resources of the world have been so plundered that the basics of a decent life - water; food; fresh air - can no longer be taken for granted. Nor even can a habitable world be assumed, for many already alive who have the misfortune to be born at the wrong time.

Baby Boomers have breached the trust they owed to the world's peoples coming after them.

They stand accused as multiple violators of fundamental human rights.

To summarise the briefing note (some 43 pages long) covered the following topics:

  • Climate Change
  • Global Economy
  • Pensions
  • Corporate Governance
  • Housing
  • Health
  • Education
  • Youth
  • War on Terror

The Defence in the Baby Boomer Generation Trial

The team for the defence of the baby boomer generation trial was robust.  They stated the baby boomers (born between 1945-1964)

  • inherited a world laid waste by war and rebuilt it,staying clear of further war despite the power of the weapons they had to hand.
  • They evolved a welfare state to provide security for all people and
  • brought freedom to colonies the world over.

The world they handed over was in decent shape. It is generations X and Y, with their compulsion to embrace the market, their lack of any kind of social solidarity and their failure to think imaginatively and together to solve the issues that confront them (much smaller than anything they faced) that are the true culprits for the mess we are in.

So who is right?

The charges against the Baby Boomers were brought by a team of legal experts, backed by human rights and other specialist witnesses.  The briefing notes went into considerable detail and were 43 pages long.

Expert witnesses accused the baby boomers of

  • plundering the resources of the world so that basic human rights such as water, food, fresh air can no longer be taken for granted.
  • We were also accused of benefitting from state services such as education, mortgage subsidies, rent control and
  • the fact that the young of today have to work for free as interns.

The case against went on to say that although we benefitted from these things once we gained power we denied the same benefits to future generations.

The Baby Boomer Defence

The baby boomer generation trial defence team was led by an equally distinguished legal team overseen by Professor Judith Rees, but I was rather perplexed to see that the Defence Statement was only 2 pages long compared to the 43 page brief of the prosecution

HELP!  Did that mean the evidence against us was overwhelming?  Are we Guilty as Charged?

The Defence stated that:

  • we had inherited a world laid waste by war and rebuilt it and done our utmost to stay clear of further wars even though we had the power of weapons available to us.
  • We had evolved a welfare state and had brought freedom to other colonies.
  • We had also endeavoured to acknowledge and manage climate change.

One of the expert witnesses for the defence argued that the baby boomers had contributed a great deal to make life better for future generations and she went on to state how much voluntary work is now being undertaken by baby boomers presumably in their retirement.

Another expert witness argued that the baby boomer generation had paved the way for the younger generations to thrive with more gender parity.

The babyboomers argued their lack of any kind of social solidarity and their failure to think imaginatively and together to solve the issue that confront them it is entirely Generations X and Y  and they are the true culprits for the mess they are in.

A mixed jury of young and old people, specially convened to hear the case. were dismissed to deliberate while the participating audience held an extensive question and answer debate after which they were also asked to cast their vote.

The Jury

What verdict will be delivered in baby boomer generation trial?

The Verdict

So was it GUILTY as Charged?

The Audience voted NOT GUILTY by a narrow majority 51% to 49%

However the Jury found the baby boomers NOT GUILTY with a majority verdict of 10 to 2.

Surprised?   Of course not.

OK  I know the baby boomer generation trial  was only pretend but you have to admit it was well done and an excellent training ground for the students involved.    And next time a member of the younger generation blame us for the chaos of the world we will know  what to say in our defence!
